The upcoming RIMPAC exercise, hosted by the US military and held every two years, is set to begin on June 26, 2024, with the decommissioned USS Tarawa, an amphibious assault ship, serving as the target ship for live-fire drills by participating countries. This marks the second Tarawa-class ship in nearly 20 years and the first large amphibious warfare vessel to be sunk in a US military exercise in over a decade. With the Chinese Navy already having 3 Type 075 amphibious assault ships in service and another being outfitted, the selection of USS Tarawa as a target ship holds significant implications.
