The US Department of Education is instituting a payment adjustment that could provide borrowers with credit towards loan forgiveness for Federal Family Education (FFEL), Perkins, and Health Education Assistance (HEAL) loans. Student loan expert Mark Kantrowitz explains that borrowers must consolidate their loans by June 30 to be eligible for this credit. By adjusting the payment count, borrowers who have had these older loans in repayment for a long time may have already met the forgiveness requirements.
