US Department of State Condemns China's Sentencing of MeToo and Labor Rights Activists

Reported 10 months ago

The US Department of State issued a statement on June 17th condemning China's sentencing of two activists as 'unjust,' urging the immediate release of Huang Xueqin and Wang Jianbing and others unjustly detained for exercising their basic freedoms. The court in Guangzhou sentenced independent journalist Huang Xueqin to five years in prison and labor rights activist Wang Jianbing to three and a half years, on charges of 'inciting subversion of state power,' after 1000 days of detention. Huang Xueqin was known for her role in the 'MeToo' movement in China, and Wang Jianbing has been advocating for workers' and disabled rights since 2014. Support organizations report that Huang Xueqin plans to appeal the verdict, with protests and vigils held in various locations in the United States in solidarity with the activists.
