The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly planning to file a consumer protection lawsuit against ByteDance's TikTok later this year on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission, focusing on children's privacy violations instead of data security issues. The lawsuit will not include allegations of TikTok misleading U.S. consumers about their data security or informing them about China-based employees' access to personal and financial information. Both the DOJ and TikTok have not responded to requests for comment, but earlier this week, the FTC referred a complaint against TikTok over potential children's privacy violations to the DOJ. Additionally, TikTok and ByteDance are seeking to challenge a law that could ban the app in the U.S. next year.
