US Driver Arrested for Showing Middle Finger to State Police, Claims 'Middle Finger is Freedom of Speech' and Wins $5.68 Million

Reported about 1 year ago

In Vermont, Gregory Bombard was pulled over by a state police officer in 2018 for allegedly showing the officer the middle finger. Bombard denied the accusation but later actually gave the finger to the officer out of frustration, leading to his arrest under 'disturbing the peace' charges. Claiming that the gesture is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution as freedom of speech, Bombard sued the officer and the state, eventually winning a $175,000 settlement in 2024, supported by the American Civil Liberties Union.
