The US Commerce Department is investigating whether China Mobile Ltd., China Telecom Corp., and China Unicom, the big three state-controlled telecom carriers in China, are providing American data to Beijing through their US cloud services. The probe involves subpoenaing information and risk-based analyses. Washington has long warned about security risks from Chinese telcos, leading to the decision to remove China Mobile and China Unicom from the US market in 2022. The companies and their US-based lawyers have not commented on the investigation.
