The Biden administration is investigating China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom over concerns that they could exploit access to American data through their U.S. cloud and internet businesses by providing it to Beijing. Despite not providing telephone and retail internet services in the United States, the Chinese companies still have a small presence there through cloud services and routing U.S. internet traffic. Regulators are considering blocking transactions that allow them to operate in data centers and route data for internet providers, potentially crippling their remaining U.S. businesses and preventing them from obtaining U.S. data.
