US, Japan, and South Korea Ministerial Meeting Agrees to Strengthen Semiconductor Supply Chain

On June 28, 2024, the US, Japan, and South Korea convened their first ministerial meeting in Washington D.C. to discuss trade and industrial issues, including supply chains and regional economic security. Following the meeting, a joint statement was released indicating the three countries' commitment to enhancing semiconductor and critical mineral supply chains, as well as cooperating on advanced technology export controls. US Commerce Secretary Raimondo and South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kang, attended a semiconductor forum alongside representatives from semiconductor companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, Intel, and IBM. Kang emphasized that semiconductor collaboration is a core pillar of the evolving alliance between South Korea and the US, transitioning from a security partnership to an alliance encompassing supply chains, industry, and scientific technology.
