US-Japan Joint Mine Warfare Exercise Ensures Safety of Key Waterways

According to a report by Japan's Kyodo News on June 21, the US Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) conducted the 'Reiwa 6' (2024) mine warfare joint exercise from June 17 to 29 in the waters near Iwo Jima. The exercise involved unmanned vehicles, manned vessels, and underwater operators working together to enhance the safety of key waterways through tasks such as positioning, identification, and mine clearance. By utilizing a combination of unmanned and manned platforms, the two countries aimed to improve their mine detection and disposal capabilities, with a focus on magnetic and acoustic mines. This marked the 51st time the JMSDF conducted such training since 1973, emphasizing the importance of operational coordination between different types of platforms and unmanned vehicles for effective maritime security.
