In an article by The Washington Post reporter Josh Rogin on June 10, it was revealed that the US Indo-Pacific Command Commander Admiral Samuel Paparo expressed the US military's plan to prevent Xi Jinping from attempting a military attack on Taiwan and ensure that victory would not come easy. The plan, known as the 'Hellscape' strategy, involves deploying thousands of unmanned drones, ships, and submarines in the Taiwan Strait if China's attack fleet crosses over. This plan aims to make the situation miserable for them, buying time for subsequent actions. The US Department of Defense has allocated $1 billion for the 'Replicator' project to produce unmanned drones and ships in response to the Taiwan Strait situation, although the delivery timeline is unclear. Various US think tanks warn of increased risks if these new equipment are not deployed before China's attack, potentially leading to significant losses for the US and its regional allies like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. It is also suggested that China may opt for a complete blockade of Taiwan instead of a military attack, as demonstrated in recent military exercises. Admiral Paparo states that these scenarios provide valuable learning opportunities for the US military, as attempts to persuade China to politically liberalize in Asia have failed, leaving the region with the choice of submission or arming themselves to the teeth, each having direct consequences on American citizens' safety, freedom, and prosperity.
