The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intends to eliminate nearly half a million barred owls over three decades to protect the declining populations of the spotted owl in the West Coast forests. Barred owls from the eastern U.S. have encroached on the territories of the native northern and California spotted owls, making it difficult for the smaller owls to compete for resources. This controversial plan of killing one owl species to save another has sparked debates among wildlife advocates and conservationists.
