Pentagon confirmed on July 8 that despite Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) project budget overspending by 81%, reaching a staggering $141 billion, the US has no choice but to continue investing in the project to uphold deterrence capabilities against China and Russia. The project's significant overspending has triggered congressional scrutiny under the Nunn-McCurdy Act due to the lack of lower-cost alternatives, resulting in delays and calls for cost-saving measures through equipment adjustments and budget reallocations within the Air Force. The Sentinel project aims to modernize 450 missile launch silos, control centers, and bases, marking the first major upgrade to the US land-based strategic nuclear arsenal in 60 years.
