U.S. political independents, typically a center ground in consumer sentiment surveys about the economy, have shifted closer to Republicans' negative views this year, posing a challenge for Democrats ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election. The University of Michigan's monthly consumer sentiment survey hit a six-month low in May, with assessments of the current situation at the lowest in a year. Independents, a critical swing voting block, have historically aligned closely with the overall sentiment score but have now deviated significantly, registering a 9.6% drop in May, the largest deviation since the survey began in 2017. This shift may impact the upcoming election, as Biden's approval rating has fallen to 36%, with the economy being the top concern for voters.
