US railroad Amtrak expects to break passenger records in 2024

Reported 7 months ago

Amtrak projects to surpass pre-COVID 2019 ridership levels for the first time in 2024, reaching a record high despite having reduced capacity. With ridership up 20% in the first seven months of the fiscal year, ticket revenue has also increased by 10% compared to 2023. CEO Stephen Gardner anticipates exceeding the 2019 record of 32.3 million passengers, highlighting challenges such as decreased business travel due to the pandemic and delays in new car and trainset services. Amtrak aims to double nationwide ridership by 2040, with increased services planned along the East Coast following Congress approval of $66 billion for rail projects, including $22 billion allocated to Amtrak.
