The US finalized less stringent vehicle fuel economy rules through 2031 than originally proposed, increasing Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements to about 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031 from the current 39.1 mpg. The new rules were revised after lobbying from automakers and criticism from environmental groups, with the final regulations aimed at reducing compliance penalties for the industry.
