The US has imposed sanctions on Gazprombank, the last major Russian financial institution not previously under penalties, as part of its efforts to limit Russian gas exports. This move, made by the Biden administration, is expected to heighten risks of gas supply disruptions to Central Europe amid ongoing energy challenges. Although Europe has diminished its dependency on Russian gas, such sanctions may lead to increased competition and prices for remaining supplies, particularly with a looming expiration of a transit deal through Ukraine. The sanctions will bar future payments to Gazprombank for energy transactions, further constraining Russia's ability to fund its military activities in Ukraine.
