US Sells Attack Drones to Taiwan for Targeting with Loitering Munitions

Reported about 1 year ago

The Biden administration announced the sale of two attack drones to Taiwan on June 19, 2024. These drones, officially named 'Loitering Munitions,' are designed for targeting purposes and operate differently from traditional missiles. Loitering munitions fly slower, loitering in the potential target area until a ground target is identified and then diving to strike. The Taiwanese military will introduce the latest Block20 model with a lightweight design and a 20-minute flight time, capable of hitting personnel and lightly armored targets. The Altius drone, currently unnamed, is designed for armor target attacks with a long loiter time of over four hours and a recycling feature for reuse if no target is found. These drones further enhance Taiwan's tactical capabilities and immediate strike ability. However, challenges remain in developing tactics for their use and defense against enemy drones, as current guidelines and electronic warfare capabilities are lacking in ground forces.
