US Supreme Court blocks Purdue Pharma bankruptcy settlement

Reported 9 months ago

The US Supreme Court blocked a Purdue Pharma bankruptcy settlement that aimed to provide immunity to the Sackler family, owners of OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma, from lawsuits related to the opioid epidemic. The 5-4 decision reversed a lower court ruling, stating that the Sacklers had not filed for bankruptcy and were seeking discharge without consent from affected parties. The settlement, which was challenged by President Joe Biden's administration, involved Purdue paying up to $6 billion to settle lawsuits accusing the company of misleading marketing of OxyContin, a potent pain medication.
