According to a report by Military.com on June 28, 2024, the USS Hornet, leading the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) to stabilize the Middle East region, has entered the East Mediterranean Sea to deter the escalating conflict between Israel and Lebanon, preventing it from evolving into a wider war. The USS Hornet ARG, including the USS Oak Hill and the USS New York, carrying the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU), is capable of conducting amphibious landings, humanitarian rescue missions, and various other tasks. This deployment is similar to the one last year when the USS Baton Rouge was in the East Mediterranean following a Hamas attack on Israel, offering more options for US decision-makers and deterring conflict escalation.
