Cheng Bo-wen, a retired university professor, proposed on July 8, 2024 at 4:10 pm that the government should effectively use Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to address urgent housing issues faced by the public in Taiwan. He highlighted the pressing issues of urban renewal following the recent Hualien earthquake and the unaffordability of housing for many citizens. Cheng suggested that harnessing PPPs could help overcome government resource shortages and that REITs could provide funding for urban renewal and public housing construction, discouraging speculative real estate investment. He referenced the global trend of governments utilizing PPPs for public housing initiatives and recommended that Taiwan look to successful examples in mainland China and other regions to involve private capital in urban redevelopment and housing projects.
