Venezuela's opposition has declined to sign a proposed pact by President Nicolás Maduro requiring candidates to acknowledge the results of the upcoming July 28 presidential election. This refusal has heightened tensions between the rival parties as the opposition accuses the government of violating electoral agreements by not inviting the European Union to observe the voting process. The opposition candidate Edmundo González and a dissident from the opposition, Enrique Márquez, have both refused to sign the agreement. Meanwhile, the government has increased political repression, arresting activists and journalists and restricting opposition activities in certain cities.
