In Pingtung, Taiwan, a man surnamed Fan who worked as a counselor at a veteran's home 25 years ago, embezzled millions of dollars from deceased veterans' estates to pay off his stock market debts. Despite being prosecuted for embezzlement and being on the run for years, he has successfully evaded capture and is now exempt from prosecution due to the 25-year statute of limitations. Fan's criminal activities were uncovered when irregularities in fund transfers and a shortage of $260,000 were discovered. The court deemed his crime ended in 1998 and with the statute of limitations ending in 2024, Fan remains at large and unpunished.
