Volkswagen Announces Exit from Xinjiang Amid Pressure Over Human Rights

Reported about 5 hours ago

Volkswagen has confirmed its decision to sell all operations in Xinjiang, China, following mounting pressures regarding reported human rights abuses against the Uyghur population. This move comes alongside an extension of its partnership with SAIC until 2040. The Xinjiang plant, which had ceased vehicle production since 2019, will be sold to Shanghai Motor Vehicle Inspection Certification, alleviating a significant reputational burden for VW while allowing both companies to focus on revamping their strategies in the challenging Chinese market.
