The '2024 Digital News Report' reveals that the constant coverage of exhausting war-related events like the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the war in Ethiopia by traditional news media has led to a feeling of despair among individuals, with 39% of respondents actively avoiding news reports, marking an all-time high. The report, based on a survey conducted by Oxford University's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in 47 countries with 94,943 participants, highlights a decline in the percentage of people who enjoy watching the news from 63% in 2017 to 46% in 2024. The rise of social media platforms as news sources, with YouTube favored by 31% of respondents and WhatsApp by 21%, surpassing traditional media websites, has further complicated the landscape. Concerns over the authenticity of news, especially with the upcoming U.S. presidential election, have also been raised, with 72% of participants expressing worries. In terms of news consumption preferences, Taiwan stands out with 33% favoring LINE Today for news reading compared to other nations like Thailand, Kenya, the Philippines, and Chile. The report also notes an increase in overall media trust in Taiwan, with 'Business Weekly' and 'CommonWealth Magazine' sharing the top spot at 59% among media outlets. In summary, the report sheds light on the changing news consumption behaviors and the challenges faced by traditional media outlets in the digital age.
