A recent study revealed that 14 Western brands, totaling 30 types of sanitary pads, contain heavy metals with one brand even containing up to 16 different heavy metals. Researchers caution that further testing is needed to determine if these heavy metals can penetrate the human body, calling for revisions in sanitary regulations. The study, led by Jenni Shearston of the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed sanitary pads purchased from major online retailers and stores in the US, UK, and Greece, screening for 16 metal substances. Concerns arise as most pads contained arsenic and lead, prompting the need for more research to evaluate the potential health risks, especially given the high permeability of vaginal skin. The study did not disclose the brands involved and the FDA has yet to respond. Heavy metals may originate from soils used in cotton cultivation or antibacterial and odor-controlling chemicals added to the pads.
