Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway reported a remarkable surge in fourth-quarter operating earnings, which climbed over 70% year-over-year to reach $14.53 billion. The company's total operating earnings for 2024 hit $47.44 billion, up 27% from the previous year, largely driven by a 300% increase in insurance underwriting profits. Despite challenges faced by many of its operating businesses, Berkshire finished the year with a record cash reserve of $334.2 billion fueled by improvements in investment income.
