Alphabet's Waymo has expanded its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, to all residents in San Francisco after successful operations in Phoenix, Arizona. The driverless vehicle service, aimed at driving commercial success for automakers, had initially begun as a test program in 2021 with an autonomous specialist on board for all rides. Waymo's move signals strong demand, with about 300,000 people signing up for the service in San Francisco after it initially opened a waitlist. The company's expansion comes as rivals like General Motors-backed Cruise and Amazon.com's Zoox also accelerate efforts in the autonomous driving sector amid regulatory scrutiny and performance concerns.
