WestJet Airlines prepares for union strike by cancelling flights

Reported 10 months ago

WestJet Airlines has started cancelling and consolidating flights in preparation for a strike by its aircraft maintenance engineers and technical operations employees. Approximately 6,500 customers will be affected by 40 flight cancellations over June 18-19. The strike notice was given by WestJet Airlines' mechanics, covering around 681 skilled employees, with the strike scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday. The airline is waiting for the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to intervene under the Canada Labour Code. WestJet Encore, a regional flight network of WestJet Airlines, owned by Onex Corp, has been addressing employee demands to narrow the earnings gap with higher-paid peers in the US.
