WestJet Airlines' mechanics union has issued a 72-hour strike notice, covering about 681 aircraft maintenance engineers and other employees. The strike is scheduled to start by 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, with no work to be conducted by bargaining unit employees if a strike occurs. WestJet has requested the Canadian Industrial Relations Board and Minister of Labour to intervene, while the union's announcement follows a new contract ratification by WestJet Encore's pilots. WestJet, owned by Onex Corp, has been working to address employees' demands to narrow the earnings gap with US counterparts.
