Who is Responsible for Campus Safety? KMT Criticizes Executive Yuan for Stalling Student Counseling Law Amendment

Reported 12 months ago

The issue of campus safety and student counseling has once again become a focus, with the KMT Legislative Yuan caucus revealing a significant rise in suicide and self-harm cases in schools from 1,588 cases in 2017 to 14,931 cases in 2023, a 9.4-fold increase in 7 years. The KMT sharply criticized the government for stalling the amendment of the 'Student Counseling Law,' despite President Lai Ching-te's promise to revise it and promote Social Safety Net 2.0 during his campaign. The KMT questioned why the Executive Yuan could swiftly handle constitutional interpretation and reconsideration cases but delayed action on important laws concerning student rights. The amendment of the 'Student Counseling Law' has been stalled for 1 year and 4 months in the Executive Yuan, highlighting the urgent need to address campus safety challenges and reinforce student rights protection.
