Why Are 'Avocado Hand' Injuries Common?

Reported 12 months ago

Hand surgeons have seen a rise in avocado-related hand injuries, with thousands of people hurting themselves each year between April and July while cutting avocados. These injuries, dubbed 'avocado hand' injuries, occur when individuals lose their grip on the fruit or accidentally stab themselves when trying to remove the pit. Research shows a significant increase in emergency room visits due to avocado-related knife wounds, with over 50,000 cases reported in the US between 1998 and 2017. Surgeons suggest not holding the avocado in the palm of the hand while cutting and being mindful to cut away from the hand to prevent injuries.
