Why are procurements by Taiwan's representative offices in the U.S. classified as confidential? Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses concerns over potential pressures from China

Reported about 1 year ago

Taiwan's representative in the U.S., Yu Da-chuan, was exposed by a magazine for spending NT$8 million in public funds to procure daily essentials for the official residence. When opposition party legislators requested the procurement details and expenses from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they received a classified response. The Ministry stated that such information is sensitive, and if disclosed, China may exploit Taiwan's foreign resources, leading to international pressure or interference. Legislators questioned the necessity of classifying purchases like sofas and coffee machines as confidential, while the Ministry defended that such details are kept classified to safeguard against external pressures. The Ministry also confirmed providing the procurement information for reference but emphasized the sensitivity of individual office expenses within the overall budget.
