In Chinese history, imperial consorts often hired a healthy wet nurse instead of breastfeeding their own children to focus on caring for the emperor's offspring and maintain an attractive figure to retain the emperor's favor. This practice also aimed to prevent potential political interference from favoring their own children over the emperor's, as well as to protect against jealousy and poisoning in the treacherous imperial harem. The taboo of breastfeeding was not only about body image but also about ensuring political stability within the palace.
