During the late Qing dynasty, faced with invasions from around the world, China signed unequal treaties resulting in the leasing of territories including Hong Kong. As the chief negotiator, Li Hongzhang insisted on leasing Hong Kong for 99 years instead of the proposed 100 years by the British. This decision was based on his understanding of international law that stated if a leased region reached 100 years, it would be permanently ceded to the leaseholder. Li Hongzhang's wisdom in negotiating a 99-year lease safeguarded Hong Kong's future amidst potential changes in China’s development after a century, ensuring it benefitted China without harm.
