Why Some South Korean Parents Choose to Put Themselves in 'Solitary Confinement'

Reported about 1 year ago

In South Korea's 'Happiness Factory,' individuals are experiencing 'solitary confinement' to better understand their isolated children, known as 'hikikomori.' Parents undergo a 13-week program to enhance communication with their children, spending three days in a simulated isolation room to gain insight. A survey showed over 5% of young adults aged 19-34 were self-isolating for reasons like job scarcity, social difficulties, family issues, and health problems. The program aims to address societal pressures and familial expectations leading to youth isolation in South Korea, impacting mental health and relationships.
