A wild spotted seal was sighted in the waters off Keelung on June 7, 2024, sparking discussions. Experts mentioned that spotted seals typically appear in temperate and cold zones above the 35th parallel north, making its presence in Taiwan during summer unusual, likely due to straying while foraging. The Chinese White Dolphin Association urged not to disclose the seal's location to avoid crowds and collectively protect this rare guest. The seal's appearance in Keelung's waters is rare, and experts advise observing without disturbing the animal or feeding it, allowing it to find food naturally and potentially return to its original habitat.
