On June 18, 2024, at 9:02 pm, journalist Huang Yansheng from China Television News reported that with current New Taipei City Mayor Hou Youyi unable to seek re-election in 2026, the focus shifts to who the Kuomintang will nominate as his successor. Veteran media figure Xie Hanbing suggested that the possibility of Li Sichuan dominating the competition is on the rise. Potential candidates named include Taipei Deputy Mayor Li Sichuan, New Taipei Deputy Mayor Liu Her-ran, and Legislator Hong Meng-kai, while People First Party Legislator Huang Kuo-chang and Green Party Legislator Su Tseng-chang are seen as competitors. A poll showed within the Kuomintang that Li Sichuan has approximately 40% support, with Hong Meng-kai at 14%. If a three-party competition were to occur, Li Sichuan would be on par with the Green Party, with Huang Kuo-chang at 13%. Su Tseng-chang might represent the Democratic Progressive Party in the New Taipei mayoral race.
