On June 21, 2024, China's highest courts and security agencies jointly declared that advocating for Taiwan independence could now result in the death penalty. Xiao Xucen, CEO of Ma Ying-jeou Foundation, called for a return to the principle of 'One China' in the constitution to restore trust between the two sides and advocated for a legal approach rather than a military one in dealing with cross-strait relations. He criticized President Lai Ching-te's pro-independence stance and emphasized the importance of adhering to the '92 Consensus' for peace between Taiwan and mainland China.
