Fugitive Shen Weichen took advantage of the eve of the 9-in-1 elections in November to use the Lion Rock Republic-flagged yacht 'Aquarius 1' to smuggle back around 800 kilograms of third-class drug Ketamine worth approximately 8.2 billion NT from Thailand to Taiwan, but was intercepted by the Coast Guard. The Supreme Court sentenced Shen and others to varying prison terms from 7 years to 12 years and 6 months under the Drug Control Act. The scheme was foiled when authorities intercepted the yacht near Qieding in Kaohsiung as they attempted to land the drugs on the eve of the election. Shen and three others attempted to appeal the judgment but the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.
