Yuriko Koike Re-elected Tokyo Governor with 68% Support

In the Tokyo governor election on July 7, 2024, incumbent Yuriko Koike was decisively re-elected with 68% of voter support, marking her third consecutive term. Exit polls showed that 68% of voters approved of her governance over the past 8 years. Koike received support from the Liberal Democratic Party, Komeito, and the Tomin First no Kai, as well as the majority of independent voters. Following the close of polls at 8 p.m., NHK immediately reported Koike's victory. The 71-year-old Koike, born in Hyogo Prefecture, has previously served as a news anchor, parliament member, Minister of the Environment, and Minister of Defense before becoming the first female Tokyo governor in 2016.
