On June 24, 2024, the Japan Foundation announced that a hydrogen fuel cell-operated zero emission vessel successfully completed a demonstration test voyage in Kitakyushu City, marking a global milestone. The vessel, named 'HANARIA,' has been in operation as a sightseeing ship since April 10 and offers a green, clean, and comfortable experience. The ship, equipped with hydrogen fuel cells and bio-diesel generators, achieved a round-trip zero emission voyage between Kitakyushu Port and a offshore wind power plant in Wakamatsu area. This marks the first successful voyage of a large vessel powered by hydrogen fuel, contributing to Japan's goal of reducing carbon emissions in maritime transportation.
