The proposal by the Executive Yuan to amend the Parliament's powers was rejected on June 24, 2024, leading President Lai Ching-te to hold a press conference where he announced his intent to petition for constitutional interpretation and temporary measures. Zhao Shaokang, former director of Broadcasting Corporation of China, criticized that the association between the failure of the Executive Yuan's review and Lai's confidence is due to the control over the constitutional interpretation results wielded by individuals appointed by the ruling party. Zhao further mentioned Lai's disregard for his promises and misuse of constitutional procedures for political ends, alongside the need for a balance of power between branches of government. Lai's actions have sparked discussions of potential constitutional crisis and a power struggle between the presidency and legislature.
