Zimbabwe announced that over half of its population, totaling 9 million people, will require food assistance until March due to a drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon that devastated the nation's corn crop. This marks a 17% increase from their previous estimate and the country is seeking $3.3 billion in aid to feed its people, with a current appeal of $429.3 million for 3.1 million individuals. The El Niño-induced dry spell has severely impacted corn production across southern Africa, resulting in significant crop failures and food shortages in countries like Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, and Zambia.
