Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has started construction on a $200 million factory in Shanghai to produce Megapack energy storage batteries, marking its first battery plant outside the US. The plant, located in Shanghai's Lingang pilot free trade zone, is expected to begin mass production in early 2025 with an initial capacity of 10,000 Megapack units per year. Each Megapack can store over 3.9 megawatt hours of energy and is designed for utility companies and commercial facilities, catering to the growing demand for energy storage due to the expansion of solar and wind energy. China, a global leader in wind and solar capacity, presents a significant market for energy storage solutions.
