In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested that since Taiwan has taken away all chip businesses, they should pay for U.S. protection as defending a distant island like Taiwan from the other side of the earth is fundamentally challenging. He also expressed intentions to significantly change U.S. relations with Taiwan and to impose new tariffs on China and the EU.
