43,000 Signatures Error-Ridden? Report on 'Deconstructing Lian' Group's Application Being Returned

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 6, 2024, a citizen group led by Li Zongze and Wu Kuiyan initiated a recall motion against Keelung City Mayor Xie Guoliang. However, when the second phase of 43,000 signatures was submitted to the Keelung Election Commission for review, discrepancies such as mismatched numbers of original copies and duplicate handwriting were found. Despite the denial by the recall group, the Commission requested corrections, pointing out numerous errors. The group had to resubmit the corrected copies within the deadline. The group aimed to pass the second phase to establish the recall case, but faced pressure due to the Commission's shorter review period caused by new regulations. The opposition party questioned whether the recall action was politically driven, but the Commission clarified that the review periods for past recall cases were consistent regardless of party affiliation.
