River Sub, a Subway franchisee operating 48 stores in Texas, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy shortly after a Texas appeals judge denied its attempt to overturn an arbitrator's decision awarding nearly $3 million in a wrongful death case. The case involved the murder of a manager, Marisela Cadena, by her ex-boyfriend after a kidnapping. River Sub's bankruptcy filing revealed the substantial financial burden owed to Cadena's survivors, significantly more than its other creditors, and cited a decline in sales during the pandemic as a contributing factor.
