Australian investors are more engaged in activism than in over a decade as active campaigns surge and companies yield to pressure from agitating shareholders. This year marks the highest number of activist campaign starts on record, with 27 campaigns launched on Sydney-listed companies so far in 2024, double the average of the past decade for the same period. Lendlease Group is the latest to yield to investors, deciding to sell international assets after pressure from stakeholders like Tanarra Capital and Allan Gray. The increasing clashes between Australian firms and shareholders have brought new power brokers like billionaires and large pension funds into the spotlight.
