Arkansas has filed a lawsuit against Express Scripts Inc. and Optum Inc., alleging that the pharmacy benefit managers played a significant role in fueling the opioid crisis in the state by negotiating deals with opioid manufacturers and failing to curb excessive prescriptions. The lawsuit asserts that opioids were the most prescribed controlled substances in Arkansas in 2022, with the state having the second-highest opioid prescribing rate in the country. Many government entities have initiated legal actions against various parties involved in the opioid crisis, with settlements totaling over $50 billion aimed at combating the issue.
