Australia's Grid Seeks Control Amid Solar Energy Surge

Reported 2 days ago

Australia's main electricity grid is requesting greater authority to manage the overwhelming output from the country's widespread rooftop solar panels, which have become the largest source of electricity at peak times. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) aims to implement nationwide backstop mechanisms to ensure stability as the nation transitions from coal to a renewable energy-dominated system, especially after recent power alerts due to outages in coal and gas plants. With solar systems able to exceed demand during sunny periods, the AEMO stresses the need for new management strategies by the end of 2025 to secure grid operation.
